What If God Was One of Us?

Category  Enlightenment

What if God was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home

-Jane Osbourne, “One of Us”

A few months back I was on sitting a plane. As I sat in my seat, I looked at row after row of the back of people’s heads. Quietly sitting and looking around, I suddenly realized exactly what I was looking at and completely bust out laughing.

You know what I saw?

Every person that was sitting in front of me was recognized to be the eyes of God, like a video camera innocently looking out at the world and reporting back “home to God” what it saw.

While it may seem, at first that there are many individuals doing their thing and living their own lives, in Reality there is the infinite awareness of God, looking at itself from every possible angle.

The eye with which I see God is the same with which God sees me. My eye and God’s eye is one eye, and one sight, and one knowledge, and one love.

-Meister Eckhart

Know thyself. What am I? The process of Self-realization is the central aspect of spiritual growth. What we are doing on a smaller scale is the same as what God is doing on a larger scale.

If you are the One and there is no “other,” then it would be impossible to look at yourself, for it would be necessary to create an external vantage point to look back at yourself from. You and I are like the external vantage points to look back at ourselves. There is no separation, but only the appearance of such.

Everything we think, do, and say is another experience for All That Is to know itself that much more intimately, like an infinitely-sided jewel. Our lives are a way for the jewel to look at each of its faces, one at a time.

If God is All That Is in the universe, what else is there to be aware of? :)
