What Is Being?

Being. It’s one of those spiritual words that’s tossed around like presence, meditation, nirvana, and so on. Not exactly one of the words that’s commonly used in day-to-day life, but is still vitally important in the whole spiritual game that can be played.

So, being. What is it anyways?

Let’s start this post off with Adyashanti going up to bat first. Batter up!

Adyashanti – What Is Being?

(Can’t embed this video, so you gotta clicka the linka.)

He describes being as the You you’ve always been. The You that you really really are, regardless of how old you are, if you’re enlightened or not, if even you’re doing the whole spiritual shebang or not.

One critical thing he points out is that “being” is “form without a particular attribute.”

This is so key.

Being vs. A Being

Typically when we think of being, we think of a being. For example, a person is a type of being. Cats are beings. Dogs are beings. There are lots of living beings and maybe even some non-physical beings running around this place like ghosts or guardian angels and whatnot.

So the word “being” is thought of as a pointer to a particular creature of some sort. An individual.

But this is not what the word “being” is pointing to when we talk about what you really are. It’s not about this being or that being. In fact, it’s not about any particular being at all!

It’s just about being. Not individualized or part of any particular living thing.

It’s not so much a thing, like a human being, but more a presence. It’s existence. It’s just here, whatever the heck it is. It’s just here.

Look to your own experience. This is easily confirmed and verified if you look within and see for yourself instead of trying to wrap your mind around some words and theory.

Look within.

Exploring Being

Being is here within.

Does it have any attributes that make it human? Do you own a human being as opposed to a cat being? Where does being end? Does it have any boundaries that you can locate? Does it have an age? Does it have a size? A color? A shape?

The living beingness that is here is formless. It is nameless. It’s just a presence that is here. and it’s always here.

It’s so obviously here that it’s totally overlooked as we make our way through life.

Connecting With Another

It is what is seen when you gaze into the eyes of any other living being. Again, being not as in an object with any particular attributes, history, personality, or any of that superficial stuff… but just living beingness. Aliveness. It is Life itself peering through the eyes of another.

Looking into the eyes of another, when you do this without labeling, categorizing, or in any way adding additional mental processing, you’re seeing Life itself. It is Life connecting with Life. Awareness seeing Awareness. Being being with Being.

No identity is necessary. No person. No man. No woman. No story superimposed upon what arises. None of that. Just Being.

There is no separation when Being connects with Being.

There’s no “me” in the way of being. There is nothing to cloud the unification.

There is simply Being with Being.

This unity we call Love.

It is One without a second.

The Maturation to Become a Spiritual Teacher

Category   Enlightenment, Teaching

Radio AdyashantiAdyashanti, one of my favorite spiritual teachers, has an online radio show where he speaks on a chosen topic and then opens the line up for callers to call in and ask questions. It’s like an online Satsang.

Tonight’s topic was on student/teacher relationships and he addressed a lot of fantastic issues.

I wanted to call in tonight and talk to him, and so tonight’s chosen topic fit perfectly. I called and asked about when you know you’re ready to be a spiritual teacher.

His responses in our dialogue were wonderful.

The Secret to Non-Attachment

Category   Enlightenment, Surrender

Chains SnappingWhat is the secret to non-attachment?

When you find yourself attached to something, just admit to yourself that you’re attached.

That’s it!

If you can open up to it and allow it to be, it will take care of itself.

If we go to the mind, we’ll want to do something or change something to get rid of this attachment. The last thing we want to do is admit that it’s there and really experience it. It’s something bad so we want to get rid of it and experience something else, thereby creating more resistance while wanting to experience less.

Yet paradoxically, if we can first just be sincere and honest about exactly where we are now and stop running or trying to change something to make it in any way other than it is, if we can just admit to ourselves from a place of innocence and vulnerability that yes, we are attached right now, and just be with that fully, we will then find that the attachment dissolves quite naturally.

To Praise or Not To Praise

In the comments section the other day, an interesting idea was brought up, something I’d never considered before until I said it: not actually praising things.

Before the mind tries to turn this into a hard and fast rule to transcend the mind or reach enlightenment by stopping praising things despite the fact that praising things actually feels really good, let’s get really clear about exactly what’s being said. ;)

“Thou shalt not praise!”

Oh boy… :lol

The Stripping Away of self

The Guiding Light by Philip Kuglin

This is sooooo not what I thought it would be or what I was expecting it to be, this whole awakening thing.

It feels like I’m being wiped out, deleted, cleansed away, the little “me” anyways. I’m not completely done by any stretch of the imagination, but rather right in the midst of the process.

How To Get Enlightened

The Sun’s Fortress by Marc Adamus

Alright, let’s get straight to the point. How do you actually do this? How do you get enlightened?

There’s so many gurus we can follow, all of whom give similar instructions, but they’re all variations on a theme. What’s the best path? The fastest path? The path that’s most appropriate for me? Is there even a best/fastest/right path at all?

How do you get enlightened? Let’s strip away the fluff and look at the core instructions on exactly HOW to do it as instructed from a variety of teachers:

What Does It Mean To Be A Conscious Being?

Category   Ego, Enlightenment, Evolution

People talk about having a “spiritual awakening” and being a “conscious being,” but what does this really mean?

Awakening and consciousness are words that attempt to define the undefinable, so it’s only natural that there will be numerous definitions and descriptions of awakening and consciousness. Not only this, but the word means different things at different points along the spiritual path so not everyone is always talking about the same thing.

Some people use the term “awakening” to mean that I am awake and not being currently controlled by the ego. If I’m Present in the Now, I am awake, but this is only one stage in the process of awakening.

I actually use the word “awakening” to mean something very different. In my vocabulary, it is synonymous with “enlightenment.” It means to realize your true nature, not just intellectually, but to actually BE it. It is a radical shift of identity that involves the direct realization of the nonexistence of the “me” that I think I am. It is the direct experience of Oneness and Infinity/Nothingness as One’s actual Reality.

Let’s take a look at several different stages of awakening.

The following is not by any means an all-inclusive list, but it does highlight some of the common stages along the path to enlightenment.

Hiding in the Absolute

Last night I listened to an Adyashanti satsang called “The Three Phases of Awakening” and in his talk, he brought up some traps which really resonate with me, traps which I’ve found myself getting caught in.

The trap is that once you get a taste of the Absolute and realize that all is perfect, then who cares about the world of the Relative because it’s all perfect anyways. Who cares because it’s all an illusion? At this point, you even have the choice to sit back let the body waste away and not really engage the world because hey, it’s already perfect. What more could I do?

Let’s examine this together and see exactly what’s going on.

Fear of Life

Many of us have a fear of death, yet there’s another fear that’s not talked about as often: fear of life. For some people, fear of life is even more intense than fear of death.

It’s like when we’re born, there’s all these bright lights, people pulling us this way or pushing us that way, lots of commotion, and then we get slapped. What an entrance. Perhaps there’s a part of us that says, “Man, I don’t like life. It was better before I was born. All of the sudden I’m suffering.”

It’s almost like some people don’t like life right from the get-go and this never quite heals.

Escaping Life

This is a very common experience for people since life can be so unpleasant. Some people will try to escape life through drugs, alcohol, music, sex, food, sleeping, or whatever other distraction works for them.

Perhaps people get into spirituality with the hope that when they become enlightened, life will suddenly become magical and wonderful. It will be the solution to all my problems!

So they take this (inaccurate) idea with them, proceed down the spiritual path, and eventually they find themselves abiding in the Absolute reality.

Hiding in the Absolute

In the Absolute, everything is as it is. Perfection is. What we call “real life” is seen to be totally an illusion and nothing really happens. Everything just is. It’s pure beingness. There’s nothing we could do to make life better or worse. Even the Hitler’s and diseases of the world are seen to be part of the perfection.

Now it is true that the world we live in is illusion and ultimately unreal, but there is still an element of experiential reality to it, is there not? It’s like, no matter how enlightened you are, if you get hit in the head with a hammer, it’s still gonna hurt.

The understanding that this world is an illusion and not real is an excellent instructional understanding, but there’s still a sense of practicality that needs to be integrated alongside this understanding. This is the part where we become “in this world, but not of it.” Rather than abiding in the Absolute as a way to escape the life of suffering, we recognize that All That Is INCLUDES the world of the relative, illusion or not.
