Can We Realize Truth Without The Mind?

Category   Ego, Enlightenment

Question:

Dear Ariel,

How can anyone come to truth by not using their mind? Yes experience, peace and oneness are wonderful things but has it ever come to your mind that those experiences are illusions? All it really is is shifting your brain into altered states of delta, and alpha states. Shifting your brain states with a brain that eventually does turn to dust.

The mind and the brain are tools that we can use to play in this physical dimension. It’s not who we are. THAT is the key point. Disidentification with the mind.

Thanks,

M.

My response:

My question is how CAN you come to the realization of Truth by using the mind? :blink

If you sit around and think and think and think all day, will you one day discover the truth of what an apple tastes like?

No, you have to EXPERIENCE the taste of an apple in order to know its taste.

Is it necessary to think about the apple while you’re eating it? Not at all. You can simply sit in silence and enjoy the taste of the apple as it is chewed around in the mouth. Whether you’re thinking about the apple, thinking about what you have to do next week, or thinking about nothing at all, your senses are STILL going to register the taste of the apple.

Most people are under the belief that thought is the only way to discover Truth. Either we have the right thoughts about it and thus know it, or we are lacking the correct thoughts and thus don’t know it. Therefore we have to either learn about it, imagine it, or discover it. When the mind is seen as the sole source of authority, to know about something is the same as to actually know it. This is a delusion.

Have you ever had a bad feeling about something? I don’t mean a fear of doing something, but just an intuitive knowingness that something’s just not right. It you drive down this road, you’ll suddenly discover exactly what the “bad feeling” was telling you. How did you know? There was no possible way the mind could have known what was to come, nor any external hints to point out the danger. At first it may be just random chance, but when one starts to experiences a few of these strange “coincidences”, then dozens, then hundreds… it becomes really difficult to truly brush it off as mere chance.

What about the little children who are born and at the age of 3 or 4 can already play the cello like a master, recite major historical facts, and demonstrate other amazing talents that no one can quite pinpoint from where they were developed?

What about those situations when you’re in a state of “flow” with life. You don’t know what’s to come or what to expect, yet everything seems to happen perfectly. You naturally say the right things, doors open up for you, situations somehow fall into place effortlessly, you just so happen to keep making the right decisions. This state of flow may only last for a short period of time, but there’s clearly something that’s been tapped into.

There’s other seemingly mystical sources of knowingness. (Mystical is nothing magical. It simply implies that which is unseen, perhaps undetectable by our physical senses.)

The mind is not the only source of knowledge for us to tap into.

In fact, it’s a pretty lousy tool to discover truth in the first place.

Let’s say an attractive woman on the street shoots you a flirty look. What does the mind immediately proceed to do? Figure out WHY she did that. Maybe she thinks you’re hot stuff. Maybe she just happens to be in a great mood and is nice to everyone. Maybe she’s looking to cheat on her spouse. Maybe she’s looking for validation and gets her sense of self-worth based on how many guys hit on her. Maybe she’s doing a psychology experiment to see how people react to flirtatious glances.

WHATEVER.

The thing is, we just don’t know. Nevertheless, the mind will still buy into some sort of belief based upon the unknown. Maybe the mind will say the look meant that you shouldn’t propose to your fiance quite yet because you might find someone better. Maybe the situation confirms the pair of socks you wore today are indeed your lucky socks. They’re all just made up beliefs no matter how believable or how absurd they sound.

Nothing has any real meaning except the meaning we give it.

As we start to recognize that ALL our beliefs are made up and not actually based on anything solid, we start negating our flawed belief that this world is actually the way we perceive it to be. What we see is not what is.

What happens is that when you KEEP negating your thoughts and beliefs, it will eventually go quiet as a consequence of no longer being energized or seen as a valid source for answers. It will be a tool that is not needed at the moment for the current task and thus set aside.

When this happens, you don’t go brain dead. Reality doesn’t stop. Death doesn’t occur.

In fact, quite the contrary!

When you stop telling life how it SHOULD be, life will show you how it ACTUALLY is!

You’ll experience Ultimate Reality being infinitely more real than the reality as filtered through the mind. EVERYTHING is infinitely more rich, colorful, and wonderful. Everything is seen as valuable and lovable for the simple fact that it exists as the One. Love flows through the One and the All, unconditionally.

Instead of labeling and identifying things in this world, they are simply absorbed into the awareness without being first filtered through the mind’s distortion-creating veil.

In fact, it is ONLY possible to experience Truth by bypassing the veil of the mind. It can never be experienced through the mind, through words.

For example, saying the words “I Love You” thousands of times is still not as good as experiencing the presence of Love flowing through your whole being, wouldn’t you agree?

It’s not just about shifting the brain states into firing alpha or delta waves. That change is simply a natural side-effect that occurs, not the cause of the experience.

The “cause,” if you will, is that the brain is experiencing the True Self instead of the false self. The body responds very differently when in the presence of the Self, of Love.

Enlightenment is NOT an altered state of consciousness.

It is a state of PURE consciousness, untouched and undistorted by the thoughts of the human mind.

One is in Love with “another” because they are Love itself, not because of the feel-good chemicals that are released in the brain. The cocktail of chemicals released in the brain is an effect of the presence of Love. The chemicals affect the feeling of the body, but they are not the cause of Love.

Some people try to induce states of altered consciousness through chanting, music, drugs, mind control, and so on, but none of these activities lead to true awakening, enlightenment. Enlightenment is ONLY about transcending the ego by letting go of all resistances and thus seeing through the illusions of the world of form to realize one’s true nature as the One.

You don’t need the mind to be consciously thinking and running around to continue to exist. The great thing about meditation is that you can learn to quiet the mind and come to the direct experiential realization of truth this for yourself.

Ultimate Reality arises from beyond the mind.

Ariel, I am really loving you blog! Keep up the good work! :beer

I wanted to say this post was really eye opening again. How you compared the state of flow to the state of letting go of our minds. And that unconditional LOVE is the greatest motivator, fulfillment and reward that one can give to the self. I really believe in that now. Nothing else can have a meaning besides what we give it. Only unconditional LOVE has a pure nature that is probably ourselves, literally. I say probably because we can’t know it unless we experience it without the boundaries of the ego. The mind can’t tell you anything about it, even if you try try and try you won’t ever find out what love is, because love is not about trying to do something, but truly doing it. If you are trying it means that you are stuck in your mind. If you have to analyze your love or have a bad feeling or regret or doubt, this is probably due to your mind. Without the mind you “just know”. It can be unconditional LOVE or unconditional HATE, but you have to experience it first by FULLY (this is the BIG trick) shutting down the mind and ego first.

    Hello celebrate,

Thank you. It’s wonderful to hear that you’re tuning in more and more to Unconditional Love. :)

You’re absolutely right that when you don’t go to the mind for answers, you intuitively “just know” what to do. The heart is amazing like that.

It seems unconditional hate can ONLY exist through the mind. When the mind goes quiet and one looks within, hate is never found there. Only acceptance, peace, joy, and love. They are characteristics of your natural state, not something that necessarily needs to be enhanced, only realized.

Finally, one small point you mentioned at the end regarding the “shutting down” of the mind and ego: Instead of shutting down, let’s look at it more along the lines of disassociating. The mind has its role and is a very useful tool, but it is not us. If we can be in the world from the core of our being as our True Selves, we are free to let the mind think what it will, because it doesn’t have any affect on our true nature. It is *identification* with the mind that is the main limitation.

Now, one cool thing about disassociating from the mind is that by withdrawing your sense of identity from it, it will naturally start to go quiet over time because it no longer needs to be run continuously in order for you to feel like you can exist. You can just BE without having the mind twisting and turning in your head. The mental hub bub is no longer a necessity and lowers in volume naturally as an after effect.

yes of course, but you are talking to the converted.

how would you say these thoughts to a convention of neuro-scientists, or wall street analysts, or politcians?

    Ariel Bravy Reply:

    Hey Gregory,

I’d say these things the same way I have said them here: by saying my point and allowing them to believe what they will, with no attachment or desire to convert them on my part.

What I’ve found is that people who are deeply rooted in the mind tend to confuse thoughts with the actual thing, the map with the territory. The belief is that if they can understand the actual thing by understanding the symbolic version.

This may sometimes be the case. It may not. With respect to spirituality, I have found that this is definitely NOT the case, nor can it be for it is totally using the wrong tool for the job.

Yes, of course, I didn’t mean shutting down. We obviously need the mind, for example to rationalize things like writing here, or calculating stocks or something. But I think that the calculation and rationalization even have to be inspired by our soul, and not our mind.

If we ask the question “how”, the mind is a good tool to start with. But if we ask the question “why” it is the non-mind that will help us much more. But if we ask the question “what” we normally think that the mind should be doing the work, but in fact it then would be the same as Ariel said, that the Map is not the Terrain. So the mind will only give you the map and nothing else. Even if you go out there you will probably be so caught up in your map of the mind that you will probably never experience the real terrain that is full of beauty and infinite richness. You have to disassociate from your mind before you can actually engage the full richness. Say you meet a person that you know nothing about. Is it better when you think of this person as a person that you don’t know and you rationalize a map to yourself according to his or her actions, or is it better if you know that this person is yourself basically and you love him unconditionally just as you love yourself? Sidenote: First you have to learn to love yourself though. If your mind tells you that you have to be “fixed” all the time or something is wrong with you, you won’t be able to love yourself properly, and yourself won’t be able to love other people or even the world around you. That is what the mind is able to do to you. But good news is that you can silent the mind or at least train it to think positively about yourself so that it will help you on your journey to unconditional love.

Only problem is that there is a lot of conflict and friction in our society between the mind and the soul. Our whole system is mind based. People who want to have more money then others are more likely to be caught up in their mind so much that they don’t have the time to even find their way to spirituality or a kind of understanding that is “above” being above somebody else’s head. But those people look like this most of their time :hrm whereas people who live their life much more enlightened look more like this :D deep inside. And they do this :grouphug :hug :pals more often. But it doesn’t mean they have to live a modest life. They just live it differently…

I am sorry about my bad English. I’m from Europe actually. And I’m a 21 year old man on the path to enlightenment, but not yet there. I still have a lot of mind based problems I gave myself in the years I was only in my mind big time. But today I “just know” a lot I didn’t before that would have helped me A LOT in my relationships and personal development.

Sounds like you’re on the right track! :D :beer
